A well written college essay can be your ticket in, and now is the time to start writing it. Keep in mind that many schools and scholarships have prompts of their own, and they can detect "recycled" essays.
When writing your essays, keep the reader engaged by beginning with something trivial. The ability to turn something trivial, like sitting in the sun watching a caterpillar climb a tree branch, then bringing the essay through the metamorphosis and how that relates to this stage of your life, shows that you are connected to the world around you. You are observant. A family artifact, and the story behind it and how history plays a part in the future. Or maybe the inner workings of an every day object and how the existence of it manipulates your world.... These are just some examples, and if you have an idea in mind, go with it. Just make sure you're mindful of the cliché essays:
1. When you write about why you admire Grandma, admissions will wish they could admit HER, not you.
2. A resume of your life and achievements; BIG mistake. They saw your transcripts and your supplementals. They still don't know who you are.
3. An immigrant story. If you write about it, make sure it's about a unique experience. Otherwise, it's been written before.
4. Tragedies. While they are formative, they are also somewhat universal. Death, divorce...you're not alone in that.
5. How you overcame a challenge or worked hard in a difficult class. What comes to mind is, "If I had a dime for everyone of those I'd read, I could fund your four years".
6. A volunteer trip. Now, If you write about a specific moment rather than. "I learned so much about myself" or "I felt so good contributing to this cause knowing I made a difference...." Instead, write about missing a bus and getting stranded in a foreign city, and how that relates to being dropped off at college.
If any of the above mentioned are written well; if you can "show instead of tell" the reader why you chose to write about it and how it applies to the school you are applying to or the major that you've chosen, then write it. Make you sure you are giving them an introduction into the person you are, rather than the student. They read your transcripts. They saw you supplementals. The essay gives them an introduction to your personality. We have had academically mediocre students get into top programs because of their essay (because these were reach schools, we are making this assumption, but since we know our business, we know it was the essay ;)

An educational consultant, also called a higher education consultant, assists students and their parents in planning for college and financial aid.
While we can step in to help a family at any point in their planning journey, the best time to contact us is in your student's freshman year. Should your student be interested in attending an academy or private high school, contact should be made during their 7th grade year.
No one can ethically offer this guarantee. However, we can work with your child to shape their activities and application to give them their very best chance.
